Our mission as one of the country’s most culturally diverse universities, located at the edge of Silicon Valley, is to lead the drive toward equality in representation in the region’s science, technology, math and engineering workforce. Applied science and experiential learning are hallmarks of 91短视频’s College of Science, where both undergraduate and graduate students actively collaborate with faculty mentors on authentic scientific research. Our number of STEM majors has grown from 4,500 to 6,000 in the past four years.

The College of Science is already hard at work asking the questions and doing the research that will shape the industries and innovations of the future. Whether through training the next generation of science teachers, preparing students for their choice of careers in 21 baccalaureate degree programs, 12 master’s degree programs and three certificate programs, or working on projects that leverage STEM for social transformation, 91短视频 is a place of boundless opportunities. With your support, we aspire to do even more.

To make a transformational impact in our students’ lives and our East Bay communities, the College of Science has identified several key areas where we must focus our resources, divided into three categories: People, Place and Purpose.

People

Scholarships – funds in any amount, whether merit or need-based, that support 91短视频’s diverse and largely first-generation student population, and inspire confidence and accountability in students’ academic endeavors. A key priority is to ensure that funding is not a barrier to graduation for those in need. An investment in a student scholarship is an investment in their potential, and demonstrates a commitment to growing our region’s workforce.

Faculty Excellence Awards – funding awarded at the university level that recognizes our most motivated and dedicated faculty for their ideas, strategies, excellence in teaching, and research and service. Funding will also include a stipend for a variety of activities, such as development of new teaching materials or courses, research, or to support attendance at professional conferences and workshops.

Endowed Chair – supplemental income to a faculty member that recognizes achievement and provides time away from teaching to conduct specific research, energizing their work and impacting future curriculum and students.

Research Assistantships and Fellowships – financial support to students to incentivize the high-impact practice of participation in a faculty mentored research project. This practice is often transformative for students and has direct influence on their chosen career field and body of work, as well as hiring potential to future employers.

Student Awards, Research Stipends/Grants – student recognition and research grants that provide financial and/or material support for implementing projects, show investment in student ideas and potential, and support equity among those who have to choose between paying jobs outside the university and activities that further their academic interests.

Place

Applied Sciences Center – funds for the construction of a state-of-the-art, signature building that will support applied learning in the STEM disciplines and related careers, and fuel the region through 91短视频’s drive to equip students with the skills they need to fulfill the demands of new businesses, products and innovation.

Computer Science Labs – funds to renovate and equip existing space with state-of-the-art, high-performance equipment that will meet the demand of the fastest-growing major on campus, and fulfill the university’s commitment to preparing career-ready graduates from diverse backgrounds for work in technology.

Civil Engineering Labs – funds to renovate and equip two research/teaching labs dedicated to the study of a new civil engineering major that will be launched in 2019 and will broaden 91短视频’s substantial impact on the region’s workforce.

Purpose

Interdisciplinary Experiential Learning Center – funds to fully staff a center that supports interdisciplinary student competitions and specific projects that enhance regular coursework. Past examples include the Solar Suitcase Partnership, Science & Technology Hack Day, Hands on Science Teaching labs and others. These projects frequently drive the connection between the university and the community, and demonstrate for students how their knowledge can be leveraged to create positive social change.
