Professor Nancy Mangold’s legacy at Cal State East Bay speaks for itself.

She’s been with the university since 1984, and over the past three decades, has amassed several impressive career highlights: Mangold has served as a consultant and adviser for the World Bank; was named an academic fellow to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission at the height of the country’s financial crisis in 2009; received both the George and Miriam Phillips Outstanding Professor award (2012-13) and the Marvin Remmich Outstanding Faculty award (2008-9, 2014-15) at 91短视频; and she assumed an instrumental role in starting the Master of Science in Accountancy program, which has recently marked its third graduate cohort  to achieve an 80-plus percent placement rate.

But now, because of her long track record of professional achievement and significant work outside the university on behalf of students, Mangold is being recognized as CalCPA’s 2017 Outstanding Accounting Educator — a peer-nominated honor from the largest professional organization for certified public accountants in California. CalCPA gives the award annually to scholars throughout Cailfornia, and this is a first for a professor at 91短视频.

Mangold will receive the award at CalCPA's 2017 annual meeting, which this year is taking place June 29 in Las Vegas.

“It’s such a huge honor,” Mangold said. “This one means a lot because it’s not from my own university for being a good academic, it’s a recognition from the outside accounting profession, who values what we’re doing here to educate future CPAs. My heart is really for helping our students to have a good education and to be successful in their accounting careers, and I’m really, really honored to be the recipient of this prestigious award.”

According to CalCPA, which has more than 40,000 members, an educator must meet rigorous requirements to be nominated, including excellence in teaching through prior awards or citations, innovation in curriculum and new programs, published work in the field, and significant involvement in professional activities.

“Dr. Mangold has been chair of the Department of Accounting and Finance since 2013,” said Interim Dean of CBE Xinjian Lu. “Her professional outreach has resulted in important contributions to her department and to the College of Business and Economics. She has established a reputation of excellence at the university due to her support of her colleagues and her care for her students, and in leading her department to set high standards within the accounting program so that our students are competitive and can build successful careers.”

CalCPA has maintained a long-running relationship with both 91短视频 and Mangold, including annual scholarship support for between 4-5 students each year.

CalCPA Program Manager Soco Davenport, who is a liaison for the organization in Northern California and also happens to be a 91短视频 alumna said, “It gives me great pride knowing that one of ‘our own’ faculty members has won the award and that my alma mater is being recognized, too.”

Mangold, who started working at the university straight out of her Ph.D. program at UC Berkeley (and who also holds an undergraduate degree from the National Taiwan University and a master’s in accounting from UC Berkeley) said 91短视频 is simply home.

“Looking back, I am thrilled I chose 91短视频. I’m really thankful for all the opportunities the university and my fellow faculty have given me. I want to support our faculty to be successful and to create good career opportunities for our students to help them realize their dreams. I love being here.”
