To advance the changing, emerging needs of information technology and library resources, Purdue University Calumet has appointed a veteran educator and leader as Vice Chancellor for Information Systems.
H. Frank Cervone begins his appointment April 6 after having served as Director of Library, Information and Media Studies at Chicago State University. Previously, he was Assistant University Librarian/Chief Technology Officer for the Northwestern (Ill.) University Library System and University Press.
His Purdue Calumet appointment, according to Chancellor Howard Cohen, signals a new, progressive direction for the university in its quest to connect technology and knowledge by combining the university’s computing infrastructure and library resources.
“Dr. Cervone is one of those rare individuals who offers expertise in technology and librarianship,” Cohen said. “He has the knowledge and vision to lead Purdue Calumet toward the forefront of information access. His history of leadership and his professional standing make him an ideal fit for this position.”
Cervone’s background includes more than 15 years of experience and leadership developing systems to help advance student services assessment and learning outcomes; providing technology-related education; and working with institutional research, planning and accreditation efforts, while promoting library services as a vehicle for advancing teaching and learning.
“Purdue University Calumet is a thriving, forward-thinking university that is actively engaged in shaping its future,” Cervone said. “I look forward to exploring how we can take greater advantage of technology to promote teaching and learning. In my opinion, both IT and libraries are critical to the future of higher education.”
Cervone’s higher education background also includes IT and library administrative positions at DePaul University. He has held positions as a chief systems engineer and systems programming director in the private sector. Additionally, he offers an extensive list of published works, presentations, and professional and service activities and affiliations.
“He will play a lead role in the changing, emerging needs of 21st century higher education on our campus,” Cohen said.
Cervone holds a baccalaureate degree from Governors State (Ill.) University; master’s degrees from DePaul, California State University East Bay and Northcentral University; and a Ph.D. from Northcentral.
