"Labor’s Role at the Grassroots," the annual conference of the Southwest Labor Studies Association, will be hosted by 91短视频 May 14-15. Everyone is welcome, admission is free, and breakfast and lunch are free. Dinner is free for students and $10 for others.

The event on the Hayward campus, 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd., will open with the screening of “China Blue” from 6 to 8:15 p.m. May 14 in the New University Union Multipurpose Room. Filmmaker Micha Peled will be present for discussion following the showing.

The May 15 general session, “Contemporary Challenges Facing the Labor Movement,” will run from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Old University Union 311, and feature author/activist Randy Shaw, CFA President Lil Taiz and labor organizers.

Students, scholars and community activists will participate in interactive workshops, performances, art, film and music that explore the local and global impacts of labor processes and how workers and communities are challenging them at the local level as well as other historical or contemporary labor themed projects, according to Kim Geron, associate professor of political science and CSUEB campus organizer.

Workshops will address such topics as Learning to Bend Steel: The Political Formation of Laborlorist Archie Green; Green Jobs/Green Economy; Good Jobs and Clean Air: Justice at the Port of Oakland; and Teaching and Learning Labor education.

A cultural program from 6:45 to 8:30 p.m. May 15 in the New University Union Multipurpose Room will include performances by CSUEB music and dance faculty and students, and the San Francisco Bay Area Labor Heritage/Rockin’ Solidarity Chorus.

Prizes of $100, $75 and $50 will be awarded to the winners of a 750-word student essay contest on the topic “How work and/or unions have impacted me, my family and/or my community.” Entries are to be e-mailed to Professor Eileen Barrett at eileen.barrett@csueastbay.edu by noon, May 12.
