East Bay Takes Seventh at Northwest Invitational

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Pioneers finished seventh in the Northwest Conference Invitational on November 20-21. Freshman Bethany Hoopman had a solid meet taking fifth in the 100 backstroke, sixth in the 200 yard backstroke and seventh place in the 200 IM. Senior captain Melissa Grottkau finished 8th in the 100 yard breastroke and 11th in the 200 breastroke. Senior Jillian Lothian took 5th in the 50 freestyle.
Junior Sami Hernandez took 12th in the 200 freestyle and 14th in the 100 freestyle. Freshman Ashley McBride was eighth in the 500 yard free, 15th in the 200 butterfly, and 9th in the 100 butterfly. Freshman Sarah Hurtubise was 16th in the 200 IM. Freshman Brenda O'Connor finished 14th in the 500 freestyle. The Pioneers received a pair of ninth place finishes from Jenni Perez in the 1650 free and Olina Wibroe-Benson in the 100 yard freestyle. Wibroe-Benson placed 2nd in the 50 freestyle.
The 800 freestyle relay (Hernandez, McBride, O'Connor, Perez) took 4th place; the 400 medley relay (Hoopman, Grottkau. McBride, Wibroe-Benson) took 8th place; and the 200 medley relay (Hoopman, Hurtubise, McBride, Lothian) took 4th place. On December 11th-14th, the women's swim team will be traveling to Long Beach to compete in the Finis Invitational.
