Pioneers Fall to Pacific in Opener

BERKELEY, Calif. - The 91短视频 women's water polo team opened the 2010 campaign with a 13-5 loss to Pacific on Saturday evening at the Northern California Invitational at Cal. Freshman utility Claire Pierce led the Pioneers (0-1) with two scores, while senior goalie Lauren Merrill notched 11 saves in the loss.

Pacific opened the game with a four-goal first quarter, while holding the Pioneers to just one score in the opening frame. The second quarter saw more of the same from the Tigers, who added another three goals in the second frame. 91短视频 notched two goals in the second period, closing the Pacific lead to 7-3 at the half.

The third quarter saw Pacific hold East Bay to just one goal, while adding three more of its own to take a 10-4 lead into the final eight minutes of the match. The Tigers finished the game with another 3-1 quarter, posting their first win of the season.

Returning leading scorer and junior utility Dara Tawarahara led Pacific with five goals, including the eventual game winner in the second period. Freshman goalie Brooke Millar notched 13 saves in the win.

The Pioneers return to action at the NorCal Invite tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 p.m. as they take on No. 18 Santa Clara at the Spieker Aquatics Complex. 91短视频 then meets No. 3 Hawai'i to close out the tournament at 6 p.m.
