HAYWARD, Calif. - After waiting out a morning rainstorm, the Cal State East Bay softball team finally got its series with Cal State San Bernardino underway with a come-from-behind, 3-2, victory over the Coyotes. The Pioneers (3-6, 3-6 CCAA) put together a seventh-inning rally to down CSUSB before playing three scoreless innings of game two, which was halted due to darkness and will be resumed on Sunday at 10 a.m.

After Coyote starter Carly Land and East Bay starter Lauren Zweigle each threw three innings of scoreless softball, Cal State San Bernardino broke through for a run in the fourth. Two innings later, the Pioneers were still hitless and the Coyotes tacked on another run off a sacrifice fly from center fielder Jaquelyn Holtzclaw to take a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth.

Though freshman shortstop Ashlee Coronado singled and moved into scoring position in the bottom half of the sixth, Land closed out the inning to maintain the two-run lead. A scoreless top of the seventh for junior pitcher Cat Schorn, who came on in the fifth, sent East Bay to the plate for its last ups trailing 2-0.

Junior outfielder Nikki Freiberg led off with a double to left before the Pioneers racked up two quick outs. Freshman third baseman Devon Mercurio was hit by Land to bring pinch hitter Dani Foster to the plate with two on and two out. An error by the CSUSB second baseman put Foster on at first and brought Freiberg around to score, closing the gap to 2-1. With runners on first and second, Schorn came to the plate looking to help out her own cause and delivered, dropping a double into right field where the Coyote outfielder lost the ball in the sun. The double brought in both pinch runner Breezy Johnson and Mercurio to give the Pioneers the win just before   Schorn was thrown out at third.

With the game-winning double and three innings of work, Schorn earned her third win of the season, while Land took the loss despite allowing just four hits and no earned runs. Schorn and Freiberg led the Pioneers offensively, both going 1-for-3 with Schorn driving in two and Freiberg scoring one.

The two squads began the second game of the doubleheader, going three scoreless innings with Schorn and Coyote lefty Cassidy Lee throwing from the circle before the game was halted due to darkness.

The Pioneers and Coyotes will resume game two at 10 a.m. tomorrow before finishing off with the final two games of the series on Sunday afternoon.
