- February 7, 2010
HAYWARD, Calif. - Despite coming back from a three-goal deficit, the 91短视频 women's water polo team fell to Cal State Monterey Bay, 10-9, on Sunday afternoon at Pioneer Pool. Senior utility Jenna Casady paced the Pioneers (1-3) with three goals on the day, while Otters (2-5) driver Katie Sowul led all players with five scores, including the game winner in the fourth.
Cal State East Bay started the game off on the right foot, opening a 3-1 lead in the first quarter. Junior driver Tristan Kennedy opened scoring with a goal at the 3:48 mark before junior two meter Liz Warren gave East Bay a 2-0 lead with a no-look spin shot two minutes later. Monterey Bay got on the board in the final two minutes of the period after Sowul converted a penalty shot. The Pioneers answered back, however, with a goal from Casady with just 51 seconds remaining.
Monterey Bay got things going in the second quarter, out-scoring the Pioneers 6-3 in the period. Sowul and junior two meter Chloe McRae both notched goals in the first two minutes to tie things up at three goals apiece. The Otters continued to find the back of the net, taking their first lead at the 5:46 mark as Sowul notched her third goal of the match. Heather Penna and Alyssa Pecora followed on the scoresheet, capping a streak of five unanswered goals.
East Bay finally responded at the 4:05 mark, as Casady pulled the Pioneers back within two, 6-4. A minute later, Kennedy posted her second goal of the game to close the gap to one. Freshman utility Chelsie Bryan tied the game at six goals apiece with 1:39 remaining in the period, but the Otters added the go-ahead goal with 10 seconds left to take a 7-6 lead into the half.
The scoring slowed in the third quarter, as the two teams combined for three goals. East Bay drew its third penalty of the game with 3:57 left in the period, but senior goalie Lauren Merrill, who came on at the half, blocked the penalty shot. The Otters, however, took a 9-6 lead after back-to-back goals from Alexandra Vespremi and Sowul. East Bay finished the quarter strong, getting another goal from Bryan with seven seconds left to finish the period trailing by just two.
Five minutes into the final frame Casady drew the Pioneers within one, 9-8, with her third goal, but Sowul responded, putting away the eventual game winner with 2:11 left. Despite getting a goal from Warren with 27 seconds left, the Pioneers could not get a steal in the final seconds to tie things up.
Monterey Bay Christina Vournas posted eight saves in the win, while Merrill and freshman starter Emily Hucal combined to make six saves in the losing effort.
The Pioneers are back in action next weekend, as they travel to Bakersfield for four games at the Roadrunner Invitational, hosted by Cal State Bakersfield.
