CSUEB Sweeps Pair of Division I Opponents to Cap Tournament

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The 91短视频 women's water polo team completed a sweep of two Division I programs on the final day of the Roadrunner Invite on Sunday, topping Colorado State, 8-7, before downing Santa Clara, 9-8, to cap a 3-1 weekend. The Pioneers (4-4) posted three wins over DI programs this weekend, including an overtime victory over No. 17 Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday, and their second win over the Broncos this season.

The early morning meeting with the Rams saw East Bay take a 3-2 lead in the first quarter on goals from junior driver Tristan Kennedy, freshman utility Claire Pierce and senior utility Jenna Casady. Colorado State answered back in the second, scoring back-to-back goals to open the period and take a 4-3 lead. The Pioneers pulled even with a goal from junior two meter Liz Warren with 2:20 remaining before a penalty shot goal from Orsi Nadasdy with just 28 seconds left gave the Rams a 5-4 lead. Before the period was over, East Bay scored a penalty of its own, with junior utility Whitney Bell converting to tie it up 5-5 at the half.

The Pioneers took control in the decisive third quarter, out-scoring the Rams 3-1 in the period. Pierce notched her second goal of the day to start things off in the third, while Kennedy gave East Bay a 7-5 lead just a minute later. Colorado State scored its lone goal of the quarter at the 1:52 mark, but the Pioneers closed out the quarter with another score from Bell with less than a minute remaining. The final quarter saw freshman goalie Emily Hucal notch one save and East Bay hold Colorado State to just one goal to secure the victory.

Kennedy, Pierce and Bell led the Pioneers with two goals apiece, while Casady and Warren added one each in the win. Hucal needed just three saves to earn her third victory of the season, while Colorado State goalie Melissa Fisher made nine saves in the losing effort. Nadasdy and Sarah Ostling paced the Rams with two goals each.

In Sunday's final game, the Broncos got out to a 7-3 lead in the first two quarters after out-scoring the Pioneers 3-1 in the first and 4-2 in the second. East Bay got its lone first-quarter goal from Bell on a penalty shot with just six seconds remaining.

Leading 3-1 to start the second period, Santa Clara built on that lead with goals from Laura Espinosa and Whitney Allen, creating a four-goal advantage with 5:35 left before the half. East Bay answered with a goal from Casady to cut the lead to three before back-to-back SCU scores that put the Broncos up 7-2 at the 3:00 mark. Bell brought the Pioneers back within four with her second goal of the game, sending CSUEB into the half down 7-3.

The third quarter saw the Pioneers begin their comeback efforts as Casady and junior driver Danielle Comforti made it three unanswered goals for East Bay to cut the Santa Clara lead to 7-5 early in the third. A penalty shot goal from Jenny Knutson ended the scoring streak to put SCU up 8-5 at the 5:49 mark. East Bay, however, answered with a five-meter goal of their own from Bell to cut the lead to 8-6 heading into the final period.

For the second time this season, the Pioneers dominated the fourth quarter against the Broncos, scoring three unanswered goals to capture the win. Pierce scored at the 3:52 mark to cut the SCU lead to one before Hucal stopped a penalty shot to help the Pioneers retain momentum. Casady finished off a stellar day with back-to-back goals to give East Bay the 9-8 lead. Hucal made four saves in the final period to seal the victory for the Pioneers.

Casady's four goals, including the game winner, led East Bay, while Bell added three and Pierce and Comforti each contributed one goal apiece. Hucal made eight saves to notch her second win over the Broncos this season. Wren White posted six saves in the loss for SCU, while Knutson and Rochelle Stowe paced the Broncos with a pair of goals each.

With eight goals in four games, Casady now leads the Pioneers with 17 goals on the season. Bell and Pierce also had quality performances this weekend, scoring seven goals apiece in helping East Bay to its three wins over Division I teams in the tournament. In goal, Hucal earned three wins while making 21 saves in 108 minutes of play for the Pioneers.
