HAYWARD, Calif. - The 91短视频 women's basketball team finishes off a four-game homestand this weekend as it plays host to Cal State LA and Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Pioneers (0-18, 0-13 CCAA) are still in the hunt for their first win of the campaign and will be looking for redemption against the Golden Eagles and Toros in the teams' second meeting of the year.
East Bay is coming off one of its toughest losses of the season, a 68-59 loss to Cal Poly Pomona on Jan. 30. After leading for most of the first half and coming back within three points in the final three minutes, the Pioneers could not get the bounces they needed down the stretch, while Pomona hit five of its final six free throws to seal the win. Freshman Emily Valenziano and junior Andrea Rodriguez each reached double figures in scoring, while freshman center Marlene MacMillan posted her first career double-double in the losing effort.
Junior guard Claudia Nelson continues to lead the Pioneers, averaging 12.8 points and 3.16 steals per game. The Daly City native leads the CCAA in steals and ranks sixth in scoring, while freshman center Lauren Lucchesi's 8.1 boards per contest are tops on the team and rank fifth in the conference. Valenziano is East Bay's top three-point shooter, hitting 36 percent of her shots from downtown and knocking down an average of 1.6 treys per contest, ranking sixth in the league.
The Pioneers have regained a key player in MacMillan, after the Tracy native missed 10 games with an injury, she is averaging 9.2 points and six boards per game over the five contests since her return. 91短视频 is still missing two key components, however, as freshman guard Jasmine Smith and junior center Amaris Sanders have both been sidelined with injuries. Though both may be cleared to play this weekend, the pair has been missed as they account for nearly 10 points and seven rebounds per game when they are injury free.
Cal State LA comes into the weekend with a record of 4-15 overall and 2-12 in conference play after getting swept at home last weekend by Sonoma State and Humboldt State. The Golden Eagles are looking to snap a four-game losing streak that has seen them lose by at least 15 in each of the last three games. Junior guard Jazzi Johnson leads LA with 12.7 points per game and is the CCAA's top shooter, knocking down nearly 58 percent of her shots from the field. Junior forward Jordan Kuzma is leading the Golden Eagle rebounding efforts, pulling down 7.8 boards per contest. Cal State LA is 4-2 all-time against the Pioneers, including a 68-59 win over East Bay in the teams' first meeting this year.
Cal State Dominguez Hills is coming off a 68-59 victory over Sonoma State last weekend and has won three of last five games. The Toros (7-12, 6-8) enter the weekend as the eighth place team in the CCAA, holding onto the final conference tournament spot and looking to remain in the top eight as they head into the final stretch run of the regular season. Dominguez Hills is led by junior guard Neka Mixon's 16.3 points and 8.6 rebounds per game since she returned to play on Jan. 2, while junior guard Brandie McCann, who averages 11.5 points per game, is among the league's top free throw and three-point shooters. The Toros claimed the first meeting between the teams this season with a 86-71 win in Carson that saw Mixon post a 20-point, 12-rebound double-double. Cal State Dominguez Hills travels to No. 8 UC San Diego on Thursday night.
The Pioneers and Golden Eagles are set to tip off on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Pioneer Gym. The game is part of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) Pink Zone initiative which aims to raise awareness of breast cancer within the women's basketball community. More than 1,600 teams and organizations participated in the program in 2009, raising over $1.3 million for the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. Fans are encouraged to bring their basketball banks back to Pioneer Gym on Thursday, those who donate their collected change or five dollars will receive a 91短视频 Pink Zone t-shirt. All proceeds from the event will go to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.
