HAYWARD, Calif. - Though it matched Harvard for three quarters, the 91短视频 women's water polo team fell to the Crimson, 15-11, on Friday afternoon at Pioneer Pool. The Pioneers (16-7) came back from an 8-4 deficit in the second quarter to tie the game 9-9 before Harvard went on a 6-2 run to end the game and East Bay's five-game winning streak.
The Pioners opened a high-scoring first quarter with a goal from freshman Claire Pierce just over 40 seconds in, but the Crimson answered with a score just 17 seconds later to tie the game 1-1. Harvard scored a pair of goals to take a 3-1 lead midway through the quarter before junior Liz Warren answered with her first of four goals on the day. After senior goalie Lauren Merrill stopped a penalty shot at the 4:20 mark, the two squads traded goals to end the quarter and give Harvard a 5-4 lead.
The Crimson opened the second stanza with three straight goals to take an 8-4 lead, their largest of the game to that point. The Pioneers regrouped, however, responding with goals from seniors Jenna Casady and Lauren Griffin to close the gap to 8-6 before Merrill made her second penalty-shot save of the game, sending the Pioneers to the half trailing by two.
A goal from Warren at the 6:54 mark in the third quarter cut the Harvard lead to just one before scoring slowed dramatically in a period that saw the teams combine for six kickouts. The Crimson got a goal from Devan Kennifer with 3:29 remaining to regain a two-goal lead before junior Tristan Kennedy-Donohue answered 20 seconds later to cut the lead to 9-8. East Bay tied things up for the first time since the first quarter on a goal from freshman Chelsie Bryan with 2:20 remaining in the third. The Crimson were not to be stopped, however, as Aisha Price put away the go-ahead goal less than a minute later to take a 10-9 lead into the final period.
The Crimson opened the scoring in a fourth quarter that saw it out-score the Pioneers 5-2. Warren notched her fourth goal of the game to cut the lead to just one, 11-10, before Harvard posted three-straight goals, including the eventual game-winner from Price on a penalty shot, to take a 14-10 lead. Kennedy-Donohue capped the scoring for the Pioneers with her second goal before the Crimson notched its 15th goal with 1:18 remaining to seal the win.
Warren paced the Pioneers with four goals on the day, while Casady and Kennedy-Donohue both notched a pair. Merrill made nine stops in goal, including the two penalty-shot saves. Patricia Smith led the Crimson with four goals on the day, while Monica Zdrojewski added three. Goalie Laurel McCarthy needed just three saves to post the win for Harvard.
The Pioneers return to action next weekend when they travel to Bloomington, Ind., for the Indiana Fluid Five Tournament. East Bay will kick things off when it faces No. 8 Michigan on March 27 at 10:15 a.m. ET. The Pioneers will also meet Gannon, Mercyhurst and the 16th-ranked host Hoosiers during the two-day event.
