Pioneers Top Sonoma State, Macalester at Home

HAYWARD, Calif. - The 91短视频 women's water polo team continued its winning ways at home, downing both Sonoma State and Macalester College on Saturday at Pioneer Pool. The Pioneers (16-6, 8-1 WWPA) edged Sonoma State for the second time this season with a 10-9 decision before downing Macalester 16-4 in game two.
East Bay got off to a quick start in game one, jumping out to a 4-2 lead in the first quarter. After Sonoma got on the board first, the Pioneers equalized on a goal from junior utility Whitney Bell at the 6:13 mark. The Seawolves took the lead again on Brooke Smith's second goal of the quarter before East Bay got three unanswered from senior utility Jenna Casady and freshman utility Claire Pierce to take a 4-2 lead into the second frame.
Sonoma State dominated the second quarter, holding the Pioneers scoreless and notching four goals in the period to take a 6-4 lead. After the half, the Seawolves scored their fifth straight goal before the Pioneers responded, starting with back-to-back scores from Pierce in less than a minute to pull within one, 7-6. The two squads then went nearly five minutes without scoring before Bell tied the score at seven with just 13 seconds left in the third quarter.
Pierce continued her impressive outing with her third goal in eight minutes, giving the Pioneers their first lead since the 6:48 mark in the second quarter. The Aussie scored her fifth goal of the game with 3:59 remaining, giving East Bay a 9-7 lead. Sonoma State's Emily Pearce closed the gap to just one with 3:21 left before Casady put 91短视频 back up by two, 10-8, 21 seconds later. The Seawolves weren't done, however, as Smith made it 10-9 with two minutes remaining. Sonoma State finished the game with the ball and a chance to tie it up but was stopped by the Pioneer defense, giving East Bay the win.
Saturday's second game saw 91短视频 dominate, starting things off with six unanswered goals from five different players. Macalester got on the board with 1:16 left in the first quarter before CSUEB junior two meter Liz Warren closed out the quarter with a score to give the Pioneers a 7-1 lead through the first period.
East Bay continued to find the back of the net in the second quarter, scoring four straight goals and shutting out the Scots. Senior two meter Brianna Finney, junior two meter Allie Glogovac, senior driver Lauren Griffin and sophomore utility Ali Berlin each notched a score in the second, giving the Pioneers an 11-1 lead at the half.
Things slowed down in the third as the two teams combined for just two goals and two kick outs. Bay area native Catherine Flint scored the Scots' second goal of the game to start the third before Warren scored her second to give the Pioneers a 10-goal lead, 12-2. From there, the Pioneers would never trail by less than 10, scoring another four goals in the fourth while holding Macalester to two goals in the final quarter.
Pierce led the Pioneers again on Saturday, notching nine goals, including four of East Bay's last six goals in the Sonoma State game. Meanwhile, Casady scored three, including the game winner against the Seawolves. All three goalies saw action on Saturday, with senior Lauren Merrill making four saves on the day, freshman Emily Hucal stopping five and junior Kendra Mason making two saves.
The Pioneers return to action on Friday, when they play host to Harvard at noon at Pioneer Pool.
