Pioneers Rebound with Doubleheader Sweep at Menlo College

ATHERTON, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay softball team snapped a 12-game losing streak, sweeping Menlo College in doubleheader action on Thursday afternoon. The Pioneers (14-32, 5-27) notched a 5-4 win in game one before topping the Oaks, 3-1, in game two to complete the season sweep of Menlo following two home wins against the Oaks in March.

East Bay started things off in the top of the first of game one, ending a 15-inning scoring drought. Senior Sarah Davini led things off with a single to left before stealing her team-leading ninth base of the season. After Menlo got a foul out, senior Rachelle Boone blasted a two-run homer to left to put the Pioneers up 2-0 early on.

The Oaks answered in the bottom of the first, getting a leadoff single of their own, followed by a sacrifice bunt and a walk to put two on with one out. Another single loaded the bases for Joedee Lovell whose grounder was mishandled and brought in Menlo's first run of the game and left the bases loaded with one out before East Bay starter Cat Schorn got a pair of groundouts to end the inning.

Menlo continued in the bottom of the second, getting a pair of two-out walks and a single from Angela Woerz to tie things up at two and drive Schorn from the game in favor of junior Dani Foster, who matched Menlo starter Mikayela Viramontes for the next two scoreless innings.

The Pioneers took the lead again in the top of the fifth, scoring two runs on three hits and two errors. After freshman Ashlee Coronado singled, Davini reached on an error and Foster loaded the bases with a fielder's choice that led to no outs. A Boone single brought Coronado in to score and junior Nikki Freiberg followed with a single to left to put East Bay up 4-2 before Menlo got out of the inning.

Foster continued her quality outing, holding the Oaks scoreless for another two innings, sending the game into the top of the seventh with the Pioneers leading 4-2. CSUEB added an insurance run that would prove to be the game winner in the top of the seventh, as Foster helped out her own cause with a leadoff homer, her first of the season, to give East Bay the 5-2 lead.

The bottom of the seventh began with a swinging strikeout that saw Ululani Reyes reach first on a wild pitch on the third strike. A single to left put two on with no outs and drove Foster from the game in favor of freshman Lauren Zweigle. After getting a strikeout, Zweigle gave up a single to load the bases, followed by a two-run single by Lovell to put the Oaks within one, 5-4. Zweigle finished strong, however, getting the final two batters swinging to record the save.

Foster posted her first win of the season, allowing two runs on four hits in 4.1 innings of work, shutting out the Oaks for four innings. Viramontes took the loss, allowing five runs on 11 hits.

Boone finished game one 2-for-3 at the plate with a run and three RBI, while Davini also went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Coronado was perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a run and Freiberg notched one RBI while going 3-for-4.

The Pioneers trailed for most of game two after Menlo scored on an error and a single in the bottom of the second. Oaks starter Jessica Cobb shut out 91短视频 for six innings, allowing just five hits during that span. Despite the run in the bottom of the second, Zweigle was equally as good, allowing just five hits through the first six innings while striking out seven.

Trailing 1-0, the Pioneers took advantage of their final at-bat, as pinch hitter Emily Montanez walked to start things off. After sophomore Mary Ogden re-entered to pinch run, Coronado hit an infield single and Davini followed with a bunt base hit to load the bases for Foster. The designated player got the RBI groundout to short to bring in Ogden and tie the game 1-1. With runners on second and third, Boone reached on a fielder's choice before Freiberg singled to center to add another pair and put the Pioneers up 3-1.

After giving up the lead in the top half, the Oaks got a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh, but Zweigle got Amanda Vegas to line into a double play to end the game and pick up the win after allowing one run on six hits in seven innings of work. Cobb took the loss, giving up three runs on seven hits in seven innings with five strikeouts.

Freiberg led the Pioneers on the day, going 4-for-8 with three RBI, while Davini joined in with a 4-for-7 day in the leadoff spot, scoring three runs. Foster scored one and drove in a pair and joined Boone with a homerun apiece. Coronado also had a quality day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two runs.

The Pioneers return to action tomorrow to kick off their final series of the 2010 season. 91短视频 will make the short trip south to Cal State Monterey Bay to face the defending CCAA Champions for a pair of doubleheaders. The Otters (28-16, 21-11) are coming off a 3-1 series win over UC San Diego last weekend and are 5-5 in their last 10 games. The series is set to kick off with a doubleheader on Friday at 1 p.m., followed by Saturday's doubleheader finale at noon in Seaside.
