ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Although it held Sonoma State scoreless for the final 79 minutes of play, the 91短视频 men's soccer team could not find the back of the net in the second half, eventually falling to the Seawolves, 2-0, on Friday afternoon at Seawolf Soccer Field. The Pioneers (1-5-0, 0-3-0 CCAA) managed just three shots on the day and marked their fifth straight game without a goal.
"We're making progress," CSUEB Head Coach Andy Cumbo said. "We did a better job today limiting our mistakes, although we still made a few. We need to continue to limit the amount of mistakes we're making."
Sonoma State started the scoring just three minutes into the match, as a cross from Cam Vickers found leading scorer Taylor Varnadore, who put away the one-timer to beat Pioneer starting keeper Patrick Gilbertson for the 1-0 lead.
Just seven minutes later the Seawolves scored again, as Trevor Hurst converted on a free kick in the 11th minute. Hurst put his left-footed shot into the upper right corner to put Sonoma State up 2-0 early.
Sonoma State controlled possession, posting 17 shots in the first half. Gilbertson and the East Bay defense held strong after the early goals, however, holding the Seawolves scoreless for the remainder of the half, with Gilbertson making three saves to keep the Pioneers within two. East Bay forced Sonoma State keeper Juan Sosa to make one save in the half.
Though the Seawolves continued to control the pace of play, taking 15 shots in the second frame, the Pioneers kept Sonoma State out of the back of the net for the entire second period.
The Pioneers returned two of their slew of injured players on Friday, as freshman keeper Bryce Bookhamer, returned from injury for the first time since Sept. 2 and made six saves in the second frame to keep the Pioneers in the game, and sophomore Mike Rossi returned in the midfield.
"It was a positive day in that Mike Rossi played and did well after being out for a few weeks," Cumbo said. "Bryce came in for the second half and he also did well. We still have some injuries, but getting those guys back helps us out."
91短视频 could not find the back of the net to close the gap, however, taking only one shot in the second half. Meanwhile, the Pioneers were forced to defend eight second-half corners for the Seawolves.
All told, the Seawolves out-shot the Pioneers, 32-3, led by Varnadore's eight shots, including three on goal. Gilbertson and Bookhamer combined for nine saves and saw Sonoma State take 13 corners.
The Pioneers' Michael Dowson, Kyle Ball and Spencer Ford recorded a shot apiece to account for East Bay's offensive output on the day.
"Overall this was not the result we were looking for, but the team played hard for 90 minutes and now we've got our focus on Sunday," Cumbo said.
91短视频 will look to end its current five-match losing streak on Sunday when it travels to Humboldt State. The Pioneers will face Cumbo's former team in Arcata for the first time since he was named head coach at East Bay in 2009. The Pioneers and Jacks are set for a 2 p.m. kickoff at the Redwood Bowl.
