• The Freshman Success Seminar, “Bring Your ‘A’ Game,” featuring author Mark Hartley, will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 7 in the new University Union multipurpose room. The first 300 freshman participants will receive a copy of Hartley’s “If I Knew Then What I Know Now – The College Freshman Edition.” The seminar is presented by Student Life and Leadership Programs in partnership with the Residence Hall Association and Housing and Residential Life.  Call (510) 885-3657 for details.

• Get your flu shot from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 12 and Oct. 13 at Student Health and Counseling Services on the Hayward campus. Students, staff and faculty pay $10. Call (510) 885-3735 to make an appointment.


• Sign on for Make A Difference Day Oct. 23, a national day of community service. Participating students will volunteer at sites throughout Hayward from 9 a.m. till 1 p.m. Student Life and Leadership Programs, Associated Students Inc. and Housing and Residential Life are joining forces to represent CSUEB at the event. • Student Health and Counseling Services will host a Haunted Open House from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 27. Meet the staff, tour the facility, play interactive games and win prizes. Call (510) 885-2356 for information.

• The CSUEB Wind Symphony, conducted by Assistant Professor Wesley J. Broadnax, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 26 in the University Theatre. Admission is free to everyone with a CSUEB I.D. Without an ID, tickets are $7 general admission; and $5 for youth, seniors and alumni.

• Submit your written nomination for the annual Vivian Cunniffe Award for outstanding staff employee by Nov. 1 to Myrtle Brown in the Human Resources Office, SA 2600. Non-management staff personnel with a minimum of five years of service at CSUEB are eligible to receive the award, which was established to honor those who go above and beyond their position in support of the university mission.

• “Best of the Bay Area” – a juried exhibition of student photography from Bay Area institutes of higher education – opens with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 2 in the University Art Gallery, Art and Education Building. The exhibition continues through Dec. 2. Hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and Saturdays; and 6 to 9 p.m. Fridays. Admission is free.

• See an exhibit about philosopher and mystic Manly Palmer Hall through Dec. 17 at the University Library on the Hayward campus. An expert about the meaning behind ancient signs and symbols, Hall was a famed speaker from 1930 to 1970 on the West coast. The CSUEB library holds a nearly complete collection of his works, including 200 books he authored. Items and panels on display describe Hall's influence on Hollywood, the Freemasons of the United States and other groups. Call ext. 5-3664 for details.
