Pioneers come from behind to defeat SFSU in five sets

HAYWARD, Calif. - The Pioneer volleyball team overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat visiting San Francisco State in five sets 23-25, 18-25, 25-11, 25-21, 15-8 on Oct. 23 at Pioneer Gym. With the victory, the Pioneers (16-4, 11-4 CCAA) maintain their hold on second place in the CCAA, winning its fifth straight match and improving to 3-0 in five-set matches this season.

The Pioneers received a big boost from reserves Cara Crowder, Amanda Limeberger and Ariel Ajagu. Crowder came in the second set and finished the match with 11 kills, a .391 hitting percentage and seven digs. Limeberger contributed to the victory with 16 assists, one service ace and five digs. Ajagu ended the night with three kills, two assists and three block assists.

"Cara, Amanda, and Ariel came off the bench and did a great job for us," Pioneer Head Coach Jim Spagle said. "I felt that Cara’s performance was the difference in the match. She’s getting healthy and her presence gives us a valuable player at the outside hitter position."

Katie Allen led the Pioneers with 12 kills while Brianna Bryant had 10 putaways. K.C. Walsh had another stellar performance with 28 assists and 16 digs. Kitona Offord recorded four block solos while Lauren Massa had another outstanding match on defense with a match high 25 digs.

Robyn Hall recorded 14 kills for the Gators. Lauren Walsh and Halimah Oswald had 13 and 12 kills respectively. Oswald hit for a .400 percentage. Setter Iris Tolenada had 45 assists.

In the first set, the Pioneers took a 14-12 lead on a kill by Jit Athwal. The Gators went on an 8-4 to take a 20-18 advantage. A kill by Roxanne Neely narrowed the Gators lead to 24-23. An attack error by the Pioneers gave the Gators a 1-0 lead.

The Gators broke open a 4-4 tie with a 12-6 run to lead 16-10 in the second set. San Francisco State never trailed from that point and took a 2-0 lead on a Reyna Rochin service ace.

The Pioneers jumped out to a 16-7 advantage in the third set highlighted by a pair of kills by Allen and Crowder. Consecutive service aces by Massa gave the Pioneers a commanding 23-10 lead. East Bay narrowed San Francisco’s lead to 2-1 on Allen’s third kill of the set and a Gator attack error.

The fourth set was a hard-fought battle with seven ties and neither team taking a commanding lead. With the score tied 15-15, the Pioneers went on a 4-1 run to take a 19-16 lead. San Francisco State scored three unanswered point to tie the match 19-19. East Bay jumped out to a 21-19 advantage on Walsh’s kill and service ace. Bryant’s kill and a Gator attack error enabled the Pioneers to tie the match 2-2.

East Bay jumped out of the gate in the fifth set taking a 3-0 lead and increased the margin to 9-4. Bryant’s 10th kill of the match and two Gator attack errors gave the Pioneers the come from behind victory.
