Volunteers to make difference in East Bay
- October 20, 2010
Making a difference this year can be as easy as donating a frozen turkey or helping local seniors maintain their yards.
With Make a Difference Day scheduled for Saturday, do-gooders already have their choice of more than 20 volunteer projects in Fremont, Hayward and Union City.
Not every city participates in the annual day of volunteering, which was started 20 years ago by USA Weekend magazine.
Fremont, which has topped 30 projects in recent years, so far has 14 projects slated.
There are several opportunities for volunteers to help elderly residents spruce up their homes and yards. There also are neighborhood projects to clean up Aqua Caliente Park and California Terrace Park, as well as a project to weed and prepare the soil at the organic vegetable garden overseen by the Dominican Sisters.
Meanwhile the nonprofit Shades of Green will be planting at least 20 trees at Millard Elementary School, and Fremont students will hold an ecology fair from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at American High School.
In Hayward, volunteers will pull out weeds at the Eden Landing Ecological Preserve. 91短视频 is also holding a Make a Difference Day event for its students.
