Pioneers fall in exhibition opener at Cal State Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Pioneer men’s basketball team opened the 2010-11 campaign on Thursday, falling in exhibition action to Cal State Bakersfield, 83-71, on Nov. 4.

As a team, the Pioneers shot 48.3 percent from the field compared to 43 percent for Cal State Bakersfield.

Three Pioneer players scored in double figures, led by freshman George Toyama with 18 points. Toyama was 7 of 11 from the field and 4 of 5 from three-point range. Mark Samuels and Roshun Wynne added 17 and 16 points, respectively. Wynne led East Bay on the boards with seven rebounds and also recorded a team-best four steals.

The Roadrunners Donavan Bragg led all scorers with 25 points.

Cal State East Bay held a two-point advantage with 8:50 remaining in the first half.  Cal State Bakersfield led by as many as 15 with 1:06 left in the game.

The Pioneers will travel to San Luis Obispo to face Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on Saturday, Nov. 6. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
