Pioneers drop final exhibition at Cal Poly, 70-63

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The 91短视频 men's basketball team fell to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 70-63, in its final exhibition tune-up of the 2010-11 campaign on Saturday in San Luis Obispo. The Pioneers will open the regular season at home on Nov. 16 against Academy of Art after dropping to close exhibition games to Division I opponents.
Senior Will Freedman led the Pioneers with 26 points on 10 of 13 shooting from the field with three buckets from beyond the arc. Sophomore Mark Samuels posted a double-double, scoring 11 points and pulling in 11 rebounds while dishing out a team-leading five assists in the loss.
David Hanson's double-double of 25 points and 11 boards paced the Mustangs, while Shawn Lewis added 21 points and Will Donahue notched a game-high 15 rebounds and went 8-for-12 from the free throw line to finish with 12 points.
The Mustangs held a six-point lead, 35-29, at the half, but the Pioneers led by as many as three points early on and pulled even five times in the first frame. 91短视频 led by two points at the midway point in the half and shot 41.7 percent from the floor, nearly matching Cal Poly's percentage in the opening 20 minutes.
Freedman opened the second half with seven points in the first six minutes, combining with freshman point guard George Toyama’s five points to start the half to close the Mustang advantage to just two points at the 13:58 mark.
The two teams traded buckets over the next few minutes, with the Pioneers pulling within three, 53-50, on a jumper from Donavon Jackson with 7:55 to play. Cal Poly responded with a 12-5 run sparked by a three from Chris O'Brien and fueled by five points from Donahue to take its first double-digit lead, 65-55, with just under two minutes remaining.
Though the Pioneers closed back to within five points with 22 seconds remaining, Cal Poly held onto the ball and hit a game-clinching layup with 16 seconds left to seal the 70-63 victory.
The Pioneers shot at a 41.1 percent clip from the field, while Cal Poly finished 21-of-47 for a 44.7 shooting percentage in the win. The Mustangs shot just 61.1 percent from the charity stripe despite getting 36 chances there. East Bay’s struggles from three-point range helped seal the win for Cal Poly, as the Pioneers went 6-for-22 for a 27.3 shooting percentage from beyond the arc in the loss.
91短视频 is set to meet Academy of Art on Nov. 16 at Pioneer Gym to kick off the regular season. The Pioneers and Urban Knights are scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip off.
