Pioneers Return from Break for Pair at Home: The 91短视频 women’s basketball team is set to close out 2010 and open 2011 at home this week, as it plays host to Humboldt State and UC San Diego after a 10-day break from competition. The Pioneers (0-8, 0-4 CCAA) will be looking to pick up their first win of the season as they return to conference play to face last season’s tournament champion in the Jacks and regular season title holder in the Tritons. East Bay will meet Humboldt State on Thursday at 1 p.m. and plays host to UC San Diego on Monday at 5:30 p.m.

Last Time Out: The Pioneers dropped a close 60-56 decision at the hands of Sonoma State on Dec. 19. East Bay closed a 20-point second-half deficit but ran out of time in the loss. Claudia Nelson led three Pioneers in double figures with 13 points, while Lauren Lucchesi and freshman guard Sarah Finlay added 11 points apiece. Marlene MacMillan led East Bay on the boards with her fourth double-digit rebounding game of the season.

Looking Ahead: 91短视频 continues the CCAA slate next week when they travel to Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State on Jan. 7 and 8. The Pioneers return home on Jan. 13 to take on Cal State Dominguez Hills and Jan. 15 to host Cal State LA.

Judging the Jacks: Humboldt State enters the week with a 4-4 record overall and a 1-3 mark in conference play. The Jacks notched a 92-88 double overtime victory over UC San Diego on Dec. 19 and posted three-straight victories before the break. HSU is led by Jeanette DeWitt’s 14.3 and Bree Halsey’s 14.1 points per game. Halsey is also leading the Jacks and rank second in the CCAA with 10.8 rebounds per contest. In the teams’ last meeting, the Pioneers picked up a 75-73 victory on Feb. 24, 2010. The squads split the 2009-10 season series, with the Jacks earning a 39-point win in Arcata.

Scouting UC San Diego: The Tritons have won three of their last five games coming into a Dec. 30 meeting with Sonoma State. UC San Diego fell in its last game before the break, dropping a 92-88 double overtime decision to Humboldt State at home. UCSD is led by Chelsea Carlisle’s 18.8 points per game, which ranks second in the CCAA. The Tritons count three other players averaging double figures in scoring, including Emily Osga’s 13.9 points per game and Lauren Freidenberg’s 12.1 points and 7.2 rebounds per contest. In the teams’ first meeting this season, the Tritons picked up a 61-37 victory in La Jolla on Dec. 14.

Cleaning Up the Glass: Sophomore forward Marlene MacMillan has been a monster on the boards for the Pioneers so far this season, as she leads the team and ranks fourth in the CCAA with 9.1 rebounds per game. After a slow start to her career due to injury, MacMillan looks set to avoid the sophomore slump in 2010-11.

East Bay Set to Meet Humboldt State and UC San Diego: The 91短视频 men’s basketball team returns from a 10-day break this week to host Humboldt State and UC San Diego. The Pioneers (2-6, 0-4 CCAA) are looking to pick up their first conference victory of the season after falling to Sonoma State in their final game before the break. East Bay welcomes the Jacks on Thursday at 3 p.m. before meeting the Tritons for the second time this season on Monday at 7:30 p.m. 

Last Time Out: The Pioneers rallied from a 15-point second half deficit, but came up short in a 68-62 defeat to Sonoma State on Dec. 19. As a team, the Pioneers shot 42.6 percent from the field and were outrebounded by a 34-30 margin. East Bay converted 12 of 22 free throws compared to 19 of 23 for Sonoma State. Wynne led the Pioneers with 21 points including 16 in the second half. Mark Samuels followed with 14 points. Jacob Straley came off the bench to score eight points and pull down three rebounds.

Looking Ahead: East Bay hits the road for the first time in the new year, traveling to Cal State Stanislaus on Jan. 7 and Chico State on Jan. 8. The Pioneers will return home on Jan. 13 to meet Cal State Dominguez Hills and Jan. 15 to take on Cal State LA.

Honing In On Humboldt State: The Jacks are coming off back-to-back victories before the break and bring a 7-1 overall record and 4-1 mark in CCAA play into tomorrow’s matchup. Humboldt State’s only loss of the season came at the hands of Cal State Stanislaus on Dec. 4. Three HSU players are ranked in the top 10 in the CCAA in scoring, led by Randy Hunter’s 16 and Brian Morris’ 15.4 points per game, which rank third and fourth in the conference, respectively. Morris also leads the team with 7.3 rebounds per contest, while Brandon Spurling contributes 15 points per game as well. Last season, the Jacks picked up a pair of victories over the Pioneers, including a 64-50 win in Hayward.

Tracking the Tritons: UC San Diego enters the week with a 6-4 overall record and a 1-3 mark in conference play. The Tritons are set to meet Sonoma State on Thursday before coming to Pioneer Gym on Monday. UCSD fell to Humboldt State on Dec. 19 and counts its 69-55 victory over the Pioneers on Dec. 14 as its only CCAA win this season. The Tritons are led by Christian Hatch’s 12.3 points per game and Casey Ryan’s 8.6 boards per contest. Ryan and James McCann are each contributing just over 11 points per game as well.

Streaking Samuels: Sophomore guard Mark Samuels was the Pioneers’ leading scorer last year and has picked up where he left off in 2009-10. The Berkeley native collected Sodexo Tip-Off Classic All-Tournament Team honors and is pacing East Bay with 17.1 points per game which is also the top scoring average in the CCAA. In addition to scoring in double figures in seven out of eight games this season, Samuels has also stepped up his game on the glass, pulling down a team-leading 5.3 rebounds per game.

Triple Threat: The Pioneers have put together an offensive trio that are all averaging in double digits in scoring and rank among the top scorers in the conference in Mark Samuels, Will Freedman and Roshun Wynne. Samuels leads the conference in scoring, as well as ranking in the top 20 in rebounds, while newcomer Wynne is 13th in scoring at 12.6 points per game. Meanwhile, Freedman, also ranks in the top 25 in the CCAA in scoring with 12.3 points per contest.


SWIMMING

Last Time Out: The Pioneers performed well at the UNLV Winter Invitational on Dec. 11-13. East Bay finished tied with Azusa Pacific for seventh place with 15 points. Host UNLV won the nine-team invitational with 968 points. East Bay had a stellar performance in 800 freestyle relay, as the team of Murphy Wimer, Lindsay Miller, Jenni Perez and Sara Bonino went a full 15 seconds faster (8:13.13) than a year ago. Bonino also clocked a time of 18:39.59 to finish 13th in the 1650 freestyle. Freshman breaststroker Rachel Knowles had an outstanding meet, cracking the top-16 twice. Her 14th-place finish in the 100-yard breastroke was a season-best time (1:10.70), and her preliminary time in the 200-yard breastroke (2:29.32) was a personal best and a new sectional cut in USA Swimming. Knowles placed 12th in that event.

Looking Ahead: The Pioneers will take a break from competition for the holidays before returning to action on Jan. 8 when they travel to Fresno State for a dual meet.

Bravo Bonino: Junior Sara Bonino collected Pioneer Bookstore Athlete of the Month honors for November after capturing the 1650-yard freestyle at both the Bay Area Invitational and at a double-dual meet against Fresno Pacific and Biola University. She also won the 500-yard freestyle at the FPU/Biola competition and was runner up in this event at the Invitational. Her mile time from the Bay Area Invitational (18:34.23) was the best ever while swimming in the middle of the season during hard training. Out of the five PCSC conference schools the Pioneers have faced thus far, Bonino has been the fastest distance swimmer.
