Slam, big inning helps East Bay sweep Humboldt State in softball
- March 12, 2011
HAYWARD -- Humboldt State took an early lead in both games, but 91短视频 walked away with the 4-1, 11-3, doubleheader sweep Friday in California Collegiate Athletic Association softball.
In the opener, Geneva Perrine doubled leading off the third, advanced to third on an error and scored on Nikki Ketteringham's sac fly to put the Jacks ahead 1-0. But the Pioneer's Kassy Winger delivered the game's big hit in the home half of the fifth, when she cranked a grand slam after the first three hitters singled to load the bases.
It was East Bay's first grand slam of the season and provided all the runs that starting pitcher Kelly Lower needed, as she pitched a complete-game four hitter, striking out four and walking two. Jessica George went the distance for Humboldt but took the loss, giving up eight hits and one walk while fanning three. Felicia Viveiros doubled, and Chrissy Stalf and Ketteringham singled for the Jacks other three hits. In the second inning of the nightcap, the Jacks used three hit and two walks to put three runs on the board off Pioneers starter Talia Ferrari. Sarah Fox's pinch-hit bases-loaded walk, Sammi Gilbert's grounder and Ketteringham's single each drove in runs for Humboldt. But in the bottom of the inning East Bay broke the game open, scoring seven runs -- all after two outs -- on just three hits combined with five walks and a hit batsman. In East Bay's big inning, HSU starter Kristina Lewis was relieved
by Jennifer Sizemore -- who failed to retire any of the five batters she faced -- and George had to come out to douse the fire. The Pioneers tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third when, with two outs and nobody aboard, they got a hit batsman, a walk and two singles. East Bay's Jamie Yaller smacked a two-run double with one out in the bottom of the fifth to end the game via the eight-run rule. Ferrrari pitched five innings to earn the win for the Pioneers, while Sizemore took the loss. Mishka Bessingpas-Hamor, who played prep softball at Ferndale High School, played right field and batted in the No. 2 spot in both games for East Bay. In the nightcap, she singled, walked twice, was hit by a pitch and scored two runs. The losses dropped HSU to 10-11 overall, 5-9 in the CCAA, while the wins improved East Bay to 10-12, 7-11.
The teams play another twinbill today starting at 11 a.m.
