91短视频's founding president, Fred Harcleroad, has died. He was 93.
Harcleroad died June 10 in Tucson, Ariz., the university announced this week. He was named president of the school in January 1959, before it had a name, campus, faculty or students.
"To start a college is something every educator dreams of," Harcleroad told the Oakland Tribune following his appointment.
During his eight-year tenure, Harcleroad oversaw the university's birth and growth on its 365-acre Hayward campus. Classes started at the school, then called State College for Alameda County, in September 1959, and enrollment had swelled from 293 to about 4,000 by the mid-1960s.
The school became Alameda County State College in 1961 and then California State College at Hayward two years later. Harcleroad wrote a letter to the Cal State chancellor and trustees in 2004 in support of the proposed change to its current name, the university said in a news release.
After leaving the university in 1967, Harcleroad became president of the American College Testing Program, which administers the ACT college-entrance exam, and then director of the University of Arizona's Center for the Study of Higher Education.
He is survived by his wife, Moyne, of Tucson; daughter, Patricia Gregory, of Arizona; and son, Douglass Harcleroad, of Oregon. A private memorial service will be held in Arizona in July.
