James Zarrillo has been named interim dean of the College of Education and Allied Studies at 91短视频. A faculty member at Cal State East Bay since 1995, Zarrillo has held several leadership roles, including associate dean of CEAS from 2009-2013 and chair of the Department of Teacher Education three times between 1995 and 2009.
“I have been a part of the CEAS community for 20 years, and I think we have built something special,” Zarrillo said. “I will be working with an extraordinary group of colleagues: Staff, faculty, and students, all dedicated to improving the quality of life in the communities we serve.”
Zarrillo came out of the Faculty Early Retirement Program, which he entered in 2013, to serve as interim dean.
Before earning his doctorate degree in education from the Claremont Graduate University in 1988, Zarrillo taught elementary school in Burbank, Calif., for 10 years. Elementary education has remained his area of scholarly interest throughout his career at CSUEB, during which time he completed a series of three studies focusing on the use of children's literature as an educational tool in elementary school classrooms. Zarrillo has also published five books, several chapters in edited books and numerous journal articles.
Zarrillo replaces Carolyn Nelson, who was recently appointed the university’s interim provost.
“Jim did an outstanding job as associate dean during my tenure as dean,” Nelson said. “He has served the college very well and is highly regarded by faculty both inside and outside the college.”
Zarrillo lives in Pleasanton with his wife, Donna. He has two children and six granddaughters.
