91¶ÌÊÓƵ junior Adam Stone made history on Monday, becoming the first Pioneer golfer to capture a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) individual championship. Stone led CSUEB to third place in the 36-hole stroke play tournament at Silverado Resort & Spa, which qualified the team for Tuesday's CCAA Championship match play semifinal round.
The Pioneers then moved on to the CCAA final by defeating Stanislaus State in four of five matches on Tuesday.
Stone opened his championship day by carding 70 (-2) in the morning round, putting him in third place after the first 18 holes. He was on fire in round two, notching birdies in six of his first 14 holes to take over the lead. He got as low as seven under par, but bogeyed the final two holes to finish at 69 (-3) in his round at 139 (-5) for the day.
Justin Wiles of Chico State matched Stone at five under par, forcing a playoff to decide the individual medalist. The Pioneer lefty birdied the second playoff hole, and Wiles missed a 15-foot putt to tie him, clinching the championship for Stone. The England native racked up 10 total birdies in 36 holes to lead all players in the field.
"Adam made a small change back to his old swing toward the end of the year," head coach Alan Sue said. "That, combined with his hard work, has paid off. He got it going last week at Stanislaus's tournament. He was determined to win and carry the team to the match play round, and that's what he did."
Stone is just the third Pioneer student-athlete to capture a CCAA individual championship since CSUEB gained membership in the conference in 2009-10, joining track and field athletes Lauren McGlory (Triple Jump, 2014) and Marquise Cherry (Long Jump, 2015).
