A Message from President Morishita: Inside East Bay, September 2018

- September 18, 2018
Last month, I had the occasion to address faculty and staff at my eighth Fall Convocation. I enjoyed sharing the accomplishments of the past year and the plans for the next. A link to the complete remarks is online.
One of the topics I discussed was the importance of voting in the upcoming midterm election. Sept. 25 is and this is an opportunity to talk to students as well as your friends and family about participating in the Nov. 6 election. Next Tuesday, people can register to vote at the table outside the University Union between 11a.m.-2 p.m. or they can register . The deadline to register Oct. 22. Make your voice heard by taking part in our democracy — and encourage others to make a plan to vote.
We marked the beginning of our first fall semester and successful completion of Semester Conversion by sharing a sweet surprise – free ice cream! During a sunny lunchtime, members of Cabinet and I handed out ice cream bars to students, staff and faculty as a way to celebrate this milestone. What a great way to participate in University Hour!
Having a time where students, staff and faculty are available to get together or attend events will result in deepened partnerships and collaboration. I am proud of how Cal State East Bay has expanded opportunities, especially in research, for faculty/student collaboration. Earth and Environmental Sciences Professor Patty Oikawa shares her experience working with student researchers on carbon sequestration in the Hayward wetlands on East Bay Today and in the upcoming East Bay magazine. She encourages students to obtain hands-on experience in collecting data out in the field whenever possible, providing a valuable opportunity for career exploration.
With our help, our students can truly change the future.
Happy Fall and Go Pioneers!
