Dr. Ramanathan holds bachelor’s and master's degrees in Physics, and worked as an engineer in Silicon Valley for several years before pursuing a clinical Master’s degree and subsequently a Ph.D. in Speech-Language Pathology at the University of Minnesota. At a level one trauma center in Minneapolis, he worked primarily with individuals with aphasia, TBI, and swallowing disorders, and there helped found one of the country's first intensive aphasia programs. From 2002 to 2008, he worked at the Lions Voice Clinic in the department of Otolaryngology at the University of Minnesota Medical Center, treating adults with voice disorders. After completing his Ph.D. in 2009, he then joined the faculty at the University of Connecticut. He also worked with the Brain Injury Alliance of Connecticut (BIAC) to establish the UConn’s first TBI support group and to organize NSSLHA fundraising events for TBI; he subsequently served on their Board of Directors. Dr. Ramanathan joined the faculty at CSUEB in 2015.
Dr. Ramanathan's research interests span multiple areas in cognitive neuroscience, studying correspondences between brain structure and cognitive function and impairment, as well as treatment of cognitive and communicative disorders. Clinically, Dr. Ramanathan specializes in the evaluation and treatment of cognitive disorders following concussion and traumatic brain injury, communicative disorders following stroke, and voice disorders. Pedagogically, Dr. Ramanathan is very interested in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning - he served on CSUEB's Quantitative Reasoning Rubric development committee, and is developing a study skills training program for new undergraduate majors in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences.
