The Department of Music at Cal State East Bay offers students outstanding, culturally relevant musical and educational experiences within a nurturing and inclusive environment. Courses You Might Take

MUS 108 - The Language of Music

An introduction to the materials and structure of Western tonal art music, including notation, pitch, rhythm, meter, scales and keys, intervals, chords, harmonic progressions and voice-leading, and form.

MUS 111 - Music Theory I

The first of three intensive courses that introduce students to the inner workings of European art music of the 18th and 19th centuries. This course covers diatonic harmony, as well as part-writing, voice-leading, and harmonization techniques.

MUS 304 - World Music & Culture

Investigating various world music traditions, including those in Africa, South America, and Asia, with an emphasis on connections with culture and history. Previous musical experience is welcome but not necessary.

MUS 381 - Essentials of Music Technology

Introduces the fundamental concepts of music technology, including acoustics and the elements of sound, audio recording, sample editing and overall sound mixing. Overviews advanced topics in the field, such as DSP and synthesis.

MUS 414 - Contemporary Orchestration and Arranging

A course devoted to fundamentals of instrumentation and arranging for contemporary band and orchestral instruments. Studies basic elements of each instrument, followed by examination and analysis of orchestration problems and solutions from repertoire.

MUS 485 - Sound Design I: Sampling, Editing, and Mixing

A course for advanced students interested in music production through sampling programming. Advanced audio recording techniques, sample editing, and audio processing tools are covered.
