SOLAR Awards
SOLAR stands for Student Organization Leadership And Recognition.
The SOLAR Awards are designed to recognize outstanding student leaders, clubs/organizations, advisors, and departments that have presented outstanding events and programs, participated in community service activities, and demonstrated exemplary leadership within the CSUEB community and beyond.
Award Eligibility: Individual
Eligibility for Individual Student Nominees:- Student nominees must be in good standing, academically and judicially.
- Student nominees must be a graduate/undergraduate, degree-seeking student. The candidate must be enrolled at CSUEB for at least one semester during the academic year.
- Nominees must be affiliated with a recognized CSUEB student club/organization, as maintained by Student Life and Leadership Programs. Affiliation can include active membership or collaborative leadership.
Award Categories: Individual
A student who has demonstrated outstanding leadership within their student organization, and has made a positive impact on campus and the surrounding community.
Nominations should demonstrate examples of the following:
- Serves as a role model and leader among their peers
- Builds inclusive community
- Promotes diversity and social justice
- Works collaboratively across the community
- Acts responsibly and ethically
- Evokes the campus mascot of being a Pioneer
*Typically, work done as part of a compensated position is not considered, however extraordinary achievement by a student who goes above and beyond the normal expectations of work will be considered. Please indicate in your nomination if this is the case.
A student who has demonstrated a significant commitment to unpaid/volunteer service with on-campus or off-campus community. This award recognizes a student committed to contributing to the public good, and providing service and philanthropic efforts through their student organization, in collaboration with a student organization, and/or across the campus community.
Nominations should demonstrate examples of the following:
- Active participation in volunteer and service events
- Serves as a role model and leader among their peers
- Coordination of programming/events focused on philanthropy and/or community service
- Leader for organization’s culture and initiatives
A staff/faculty advisor who has demonstrated outstanding support and personal commitment to student organization(s). Staff/Faculty nominee must currently be serving in the role of an on-campus student organization’s advisor.
Nominations should demonstrate examples of the following:
- Positive interactions with the student organization
- Provides time, talent, energy and service to the student organization
- Guides the development and growth of the organization
- Advises student leaders
This award will be given to a currently enrolled graduate/undergraduate, degree-seeking student assistant who exemplifies leadership and Pioneer Pride on the job. Staff and Faculty have the opportunity to recognize a student assistant who has gone above and beyond their normal duties to help their area.
Nominations should demonstrate examples of the following:
- Pioneer Pride/Represents CSUEB
- Professionalism
- Interpersonal Communication Skills
- Cultural Humility
- Leadership & Service
A student who has demonstrated initiative, leadership, productivity, and a dedication to foster intercultural impact as a part of ongoing efforts to create a globally engaged citizenry among students at CSUEB. The award seeks to recognize the efforts put forth by a student leader committed to providing a deeper understanding of diversity and social justice within their student organization, in collaboration with a student organization, and/or across the campus community.
Nominations should demonstrate examples of leader creating and fostering diversity and social justice impacts through the following:
- Serves as a role model and leader among their peers
- Builds inclusive community
- Leader for organization’s culture and initiatives
- Coordination of programming/events and educational opportunities beyond the classroom
A member of the CSUEB community who has demonstrated outstanding Pioneer Pride through active engagement with campus life activities, including involvement with student organizations. This award is open to all students, staff and faculty.
Nominations should demonstrate examples of the following:
- Active participation in CSUEB community events (i.e. campus life, student organizations, etc.)
- Serves as a role model to the community at large.
- Represents CSUEB through attire, interactions, overall personality.
A student who has demonstrated initiative, leadership, productivity, and a dedication to foster the university's commitment to sustainability. The award seeks to recognize the efforts put forth by a student leader committed to providing sustainability efforts through their student organization, in collaboration with a student organization, and/or across the campus community.
Nominations should demonstrate examples of a leader creating and fostering sustainability through the following:
- Serves as a role model and leader among their peers
- Builds inclusive community
- Leader for organization’s culture and initiatives
- Coordination of programming/events and educational opportunities beyond the classroom
Award Eligibility: Group/Program
Eligibility for Program:- The program must be University affiliated
- Program coordination or sponsorship must be facilitated by recognized CSUEB student organization(s) in good standing, as maintained by Student Life and Leadership Programs.
- The program must meet campus policy and standards.
- The department must be affiliated with CSUEB
- The student organization must be formally recognized by Student Life & Leadership Programs
- The student organization must be active and in good standing
Award Categories: Group/Program
An event or program collaboratively hosted by two (2) or more groups. The event or program must minimally include one recognized student organization.
Nominations should demonstrate examples of the following:
- Collaborative efforts to plan, design, coordinate, financially fund, and/or provide day-of support.
- Partner organization can be another student organization, a department, an off-campus entity (K-12 school/non-profit).
- Collaboration efforts demonstrate strengthening of achievements of larger program (i.e. more resources, involvement, funding, etc.)
An event or program whereby the student club/organization provides unpaid/volunteer service to the community (on-campus or off-campus community). This award recognizes student organizations who are committed to contributing to the public good through coordination of an event or program.
Nominations should demonstrate examples of the following:
- Promotes volunteerism and service oriented leadership
- Program may provide support (service and/or financial) to recognized philanthropic programs. I.e. non-profit, national campaign, local schools, etc.
- Purpose of program is philanthropic in nature
A CSUEB department or service that has gone above and beyond to support student leadership through collaboration with a student organizations and/or an event hosted by a student organization. Collaborative efforts can include working together to plan, design, coordinate, financially fund, and/or provide day-of support.
Nominations should demonstrate examples of the following:
- Positive interactions with student organizations
- Provides time, talent, energy and service to student organizations
An event or program primarily focused on the social aspect to build community at CSUEB. This event or program should provide a safe and social space for students to have the opportunity to interact with one another.
Nominations should demonstrate examples of the following:
- Community building program such as socials, festivals, etc.
- Open space for all students to engage
- Enhances opportunities for students to interact and engage with each other
- Adds value to CSUEB campus community.
An event or program that promotes a deeper understanding of diversity and social justice topics to create intercultural understanding, respect, appreciation, and skill development.
Nominations should demonstrate examples of the following program purpose and learning objectives for attendees:
- Diversity
- Respect
- Intercultural Impact
- Social Justice
- Cultural Awareness
An event or program designed to enhance the academic experience outside of the classroom.
Nominations should demonstrate examples of the following:
- Co-curricular Programming
- Partnership with faculty and/or course/class theme
- Educational programs. I.e. guest speakers/lectures, demonstration, hands-on project.
- Activities consist of educating, instructing and/or providing further academic support and learning for students.
A new student organization who has demonstrated significant success and development of their organization’s mission and goals. Student organizations applying for this award must have been officially recognized as a student club/organization by the SOLAR nomination deadline, and no earlier than Spring the past year (approximately within their first year of being recognized at CSUEB).
Nominations should demonstrate examples of the following:
- Positive contribution to the campus (i.e. new programs, initiatives, mission, collaboration, etc.)
- Recruitment for members are visible and welcoming to all members of the community
- Demonstrated growth within first year
The Student Organization of the Year award is presented to an organization that has made a significant effort to further its purpose through its contribution to California State University East Bay. This award recognizes the student organization that has demonstrated consistent flexibility, initiative, creativity, and perseverance through their activities and programs. Furthermore, the organization embodies the Cal State East Bay spirit through its commitment to leadership development, collaboration among groups, and programmatic efforts to enhance the quality of campus life. The Student Organization of the Year is considered a role model for other organizations on our campus.
Nominations should demonstrate examples of the following:
- Positive contribution to the campus (i.e. new programs, initiatives, mission, collaboration, etc.)
