HAYWARD, Calif. - The No. 19 91短视频 women's water polo team dominated Cal Lutheran in a 15-6 victory on Friday afternoon, extending its winning streak to four games. The Pioneers (5-4) were led by junior driver Danielle Comforti's four goals in the victory.
East Bay got off to a quick start in the first quarter, taking a 3-0 lead just over three minutes into the match. Freshman utility and reigning conference Player of the Week Claire Pierce opened the scoring just 55 seconds in, followed by a goal from junior utility Whitney Bell. Pierce got on the board for the second time at the 4:46 mark, scoring after East Bay drew a Cal Lu kick out.
Senior utility Jenna Casady made it four unanswered goals before a penalty shot goal from the Regals' Meredith Butte finally got CLU on the scoreboard with 1:20 left in the first. The Pioneers finished the quarter strong, however, as junior two meter Liz Warren gave East Bay a 5-1 lead with a no-look goal with less than a minute remaining.
Though CSUEB opened the second quarter with scores from Pierce and Comforti to increase its advantage to six goals, Cal Lutheran made a strong effort to get back into the game before the half. Kelsey Bergemann and Joy Cyprian posted back-to-back goals for the Regals within a minute of each other to close the gap to 7-3. East Bay responded with another goal from Comforti to re-claim a five-goal lead. The two teams traded goals to end the half, as Liz Warren scored another quarter-ending goal to give the Pioneers a 9-4 halftime lead.
91短视频 continued to pull away to open the third quarter, taking an 11-4 lead with another pair of goals from Comforti to open the frame. Cal Lutheran responded with 2:40 remaining on a goal from Christina Messer before Casady notched her second of the day to put East Bay up 12-5. With 13 seconds remaining in the Regals got a goal from Lauren Bridges to close the gap to six.
The Bridges goal would be Cal Lutheran's last, however, as East Bay held the Regals scoreless in the fourth, while getting goals from Bell, Casady and freshman driver Alex Gudenau.
Casady, Bell, Pierce and Warren all joined Comforti with multiple goals on the day. Pierce and Casady each notched the hat trick, while Warren and Bell scored two goals apiece in the win. Senior goalie Lauren Merrill made seven saves in 28 minutes of play, while fourth-quarter sub Kendra Mason notched a single save.
Cyprian led the Regals with two goals, while Messer, Bridges, Butte and Bergemann each scored once. Cal Lutheran goalies Heather Bridges and Rachel Hahn combined to make eight saves in the loss.
91短视频 returns to action tomorrow, hosting Fresno Pacific at Pioneer Pool at 1 p.m. Sunday, the Pioneers travel to Rohnert Park for the final day of the Seawolf Splash, meeting host Sonoma State at 10 a.m. and UC Davis at 3:30 p.m.
