Shakira Niazi '93 started in 2010 after some post mortgage market-crash soul searching — and a concern about the lack of clean water in developing countries like Haiti and her native Afghanistan. She has designed a simple business model that saves lives: Her nonprofit, called Salvare La Vita, bottles premium water in the U.S. Her water sales pay for wells that provide clean water in poor countries.

Electric car chargers mark a new milestone in CSUEB's sustainability journey

This week Cal State East Bay officially unveiled two new electric car charging stations from their protective plastic sheeting and “plugged in” to the next generation of alternative commuting. The upgraded stations, each with two 208-volt chargers and a 120-volt plug, are adapted for newer models of electric vehicles and hybrids, allowing faculty, staff, students, and visitors to “fuel up” on the Hayward campus at one of the six spaces now reserved for electric vehicles. CSUEB Pioneer track tryouts on Nov. 27

The Pioneer track coaching staff will conduct an open tryout on Tuesday, Nov. 27 from 3-5 p.m. Currently enrolled Cal State East Bay students who have not been recruited by the coaching staff are eligible to tryout. Tryouts are for track events only. No field events will be contested. Participants are required to bring all necessary physical paperwork and participation forms to the tryout, held at the Pioneer Stadium on the Hayward campus. Track spikes are encouraged for the tryout. All prospects should have a general fitness level before the tryout.

300 East Bay youth attend CSUEB Soccer Day

The East Bay soccer community was out in full force on Oct. 8, when the 91¶ÌÊÓƵ men and women's soccer teams hosted Youth Soccer Day during their CCAA doubleheader with Cal State Stanislaus at Pioneer Stadium. More than 300 youth soccer players representing 48 teams from the local community were on hand to cheer on the Pioneers and connect with 91¶ÌÊÓƵ players and coaches.
“My goals were to have the youth teams be a part of a great experience, have the players create lasting memories form their interaction with our East Bay teams and for families to have a positive experience with the university and the athletics department,” Marketing Coordinator and event organizer Tenaya Davis said. “We met those goals and the event was better than I ever expected. The youth players, coaches and families were a pleasure to have and I think we made a big step towards taking Pioneer Athletics to the next level.”

Pioneer baseball players Charlie Sharrer and Nick Hudson were named to the Horizon Air Summer Series All-Series First Team on Aug. 8. The pair were the only players from Division II to earn First Team honors after playing in the Horizon Air Summer Series, a collegiate wood bat summer league.
The Horizon Air Summer series is a unique eleven-week long competition among elite college summer wood bat baseball clubs from the Western United States. The series teams are divided into three divisions, two 24-game divisions and one 40-game division. Now in its eighth year, the Horizon Air Summer Series boast several notable alumni including Chicago Cubs pitcher Matt Garza and Oakland A's pitcher Dallas Braden.

Most people who work in supply management have not had formal training in the field. Usually they are hired into a low-level supply management position, they learn the skills, and they get promoted. Employees learn the supply management functions that their firm uses, but they do not have any outside education and, only rarely, outside experience to bring to the job. Depending on students’ background, needs, and career goals, the program offers two certificate options: the Associate Teacher Permit Track and the Teacher Permit Track. To earn a certificate in Early Childhood Development, the student must complete 20 units for the Associate Teacher Permit Track certificate or 36 units for the Teacher Permit Track certificate. Kropf, RN, BSN, CEP has been a registered nurse working in addiction medicine, emergency medicine and psychiatry. She is also working on her masters in nursing with an emphasis in education.

Why the Triangle Fire of 1911 still matters, March 17

One hundred years ago on March 25, 1911, a cataclysmic fire swept through the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in Lower Manhattan. The fire killed 146 people and helped to galvanize the U.S. labor movement. The victims were mostly young immigrant women, many of whom jumped to their death to escape the flames. The tragedy prompted many improvements in fire safety across the country, such as sprinkler installation and laws mandating fire drills.

My mother was the daughter of a share-cropper, my father... worked for other people.
